1. Design<\/h2>\n

Lobre mainly uses ZEMAX\u202fOpticStudio software for the design of optical systems.<\/p>\n

2.\u202fLens Generation<\/h2>\n

The generation of lenses and optical components takes place through cutting and shaping of optical glass<\/strong> with various machines, such as rounding machines and CNC<\/strong> twin<\/strong>\u2011<\/strong>spindle machining centres<\/strong> fitted with air bearings to reduce vibration effects.<\/p>\n

These machines allow the production of objects with very tight mechanical tolerances, typically within one hundredth of a millimetre.<\/p>\n

Lobre also has a new SatisLoh 5<\/strong>\u2011<\/strong>axis multifunction machining centre<\/strong> capable of generating highly precise spherical, aspherical, toroidal and cylindrical elements in a large size (up to 300\u202fmm in diameter). This machine also enables the creation of free\u2011form optical glass objects and is equipped with an internal CMM measurement system.<\/p>\n

3.\u202fPolishing<\/h2>\n

Traditional Polishing:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This process requires considerable skill and craftsmanship to achieve extremely low surface roughness and high flatness.<\/p>\n

Indeed, traditional pitch\u2011lap polishing is a manual technique capable of delivering high\u2011precision optics, carried out by lapping with hand\u2011cast semi\u2011malleable pitch and grooved to retain a fine abrasive mixture. More specifically, this method involves pressing the optical piece against the pitch lap on a single\u2011flip polishing machine.<\/p>\n

This polishing method makes it possible to produce components with excellent finishes; however, the process is much longer and less predictable than CNC\u2011controlled polishing.<\/p>\n

Numerical Control Polishing [CNC]:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Since the 1990s, Lobre has made significant investments in innovative CNC machines capable of uniformly and very precisely polishing various optical components. This marked a turning point in significantly improving the quality of the manufactured components.<\/p>\n

\nHydroSpeed\u00ae method polishing:\u00ae<\/sup><\/summary>\n
\n

The HydroSpeed\u00ae method allows us to surpass an irregularity of \u03bb\/20 and achieve surface roughness of less than 0.5\u202fnanometres on the lenses produced!<\/p>\n

Optotech\u2019s proprietary HydroSpeed\u00ae polishing method uses the polishing fluid (containing cerium oxide) to apply uniform pressure across the entire lens surface by pressing it in a controlled manner against the polishing tool during processing.<\/p>\n

In practice, the lens \u2018floats\u2019 in its specific holder during the entire polishing process without any mechanical constraint and, therefore, undergoes no deformation. Moreover, the pressure is regulated with high precision via a high\u2011pressure, frequency\u2011controlled pump.<\/p>\n

This approach offers several positive aspects, such as improved heat dissipation and complete elimination of micro\u2011vibrations during polishing. All this enables a significant improvement in polishing quality, with no risk of damaging the other unworked surface.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n

\nActive corrections with the Active\u202fFluid\u2011Jet Polishing (A\u2011FJP) Method:<\/summary>\n
\n

The machines at Lobre are also capable of using the innovative Active\u202fFluid\u2011Jet Polishing (A\u2011FJP) technology.<\/p>\n

Depending on the interferometric profile obtained, the A\u2011FJP method allows the correction of shape and finish of certain parts of the lens: through super\u2011polishing, it is possible to work selectively on individual parts of the lens using a point\u2011to\u2011point polishing process.<\/p>\n

Although this methodology is laborious and time\u2011consuming, it offers truly excellent results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n

\nDouble\u2011Sided Polishing for flat optical components:<\/summary>\n
\n

In 2025 we inaugurated a new production line for flat optics, using simultaneous polishing of both surfaces (double<\/strong>\u2011<\/strong>sided polishing<\/strong>) technology.<\/p>\n

This type of polishing, also used to create wafers for the semiconductor industry, offers many advantages, such as:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • better parallelism (less than 1\u202farc second),<\/li>\n
  • superior flatness,<\/li>\n
  • better finish (roughness) with reduced contamination compared to other methods, especially on hard glasses such as Fused Silica.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This method is particularly useful for all flat optics up to 140\u202fmm in diameter and allows very precise thickness control (one hundredth of a millimetre).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n
